Nursing · resumés and cover letters

Resumé and cover letter help for nurses.

A strong nursing resumé states your registration in the first lines, lists your clinical areas and units with dates, and backs them with patient loads, systems and certifications. Nurse managers scan for registration, clinical areas and the patient load you handled. A strong nursing resumé puts those up front and backs them with specifics.

We edit your resumé or create one from your details for $29 CAD, and write cover letters for $7 CAD per job. Both together are $34 CAD. Back 24 hours from payment and complete information.

Who this page is for

Registered nurses (RN), registered practical nurses (RPN), nurse practitioners and new nursing graduates applying to hospitals, long-term care, community and public health roles in Canada and the US.

Pay in this field

In Ontario, the median wage for Registered Nurse (R.N.) roles (NOC 31301) is $42.00 an hour, with Job Bank's low and high wages at $29.00 and $55.00. Source: Job Bank, Government of Canada (Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, 2023-2024, published November 19, 2025). A resumé that matches what employers screen for helps you compete for the better-paid end of that range.

What hiring managers look for

Registration, units and patient load, in that order. Specifically:

  • Your registration and status, stated clearly near the top.
  • Clinical areas and units (med-surg, emergency, long-term care, community) with dates.
  • Patient ratios, acuity and the systems you charted in.
  • Certifications such as BLS or ACLS, with expiry dates current.

What a strong nursing resumé looks like

One page for new graduates. Two pages is normal for experienced nurses with several units or certifications. Recommended section order:

  1. Contact details and registration number
  2. Profile: years of experience, units and specialty
  3. Licensure and certifications
  4. Clinical experience by employer and unit
  5. Clinical placements (new graduates)
  6. Education
  7. Skills: charting systems, languages

Credentials and certifications

In Ontario, list your College of Nurses of Ontario registration (RN or RPN). In other provinces, list your provincial regulator. In the US, list your state license and NCLEX status. Add BLS, ACLS, PALS or specialty certifications with their dates.

Common mistakes we fix

  • Burying registration and certifications at the bottom of page two.
  • Listing duties every nurse does instead of what was specific to your units.
  • Including patient details or anything that could identify a patient.

Applicant tracking system (ATS) and keyword tips

  • Use your exact credential: RN, RPN or NP, plus the regulator name.
  • Name the charting system you used, such as Epic, Meditech or PointClickCare.
  • Include unit names that match the posting: med-surg, ICU, ED, L&D, LTC.
  • List certifications in full once: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).

Cover letters for nurses

A nursing cover letter should name the unit or program, connect your clinical experience to it, and say why that hospital or organization. A specific patient-care example, without identifying details, is more convincing than general statements about compassion.

A simple outline that works for most nurses:

  1. Opening: the posting, your designation and your strongest clinical area.
  2. One patient-care example relevant to the unit, with no identifying details.
  3. Why this hospital, program or organization.
  4. Close: availability, shift flexibility and a request to talk.

Each cover letter is written for one specific job, from your notes or your draft, for $7 CAD. Applying to several jobs? Add each one to the same order. Order cover letters.

Questions

Nursing resumé questions

Can you tailor my resumé to a specific unit or hospital posting?

Yes. Send the posting with your order and we align your clinical areas, certifications and examples to what that unit asks for.

Should a nursing resumé be longer than one page?

Two pages is common for experienced nurses with several units or certifications. New graduates usually fit on one.

Should I include my registration number?

Yes. In Ontario, include your College of Nurses of Ontario registration. Employers verify it, and putting it near the top saves them a step.

I'm an internationally educated nurse. Can you help?

Yes. We describe your education and clinical experience clearly for Canadian employers and state where you are in the registration process.

Can you write cover letters for several hospital postings?
